About this episode
In this episode of Fieldmotion's Growth Hub, Adam will take us through the basics of Canva by creating a business card. In this video you will learn the difference in RGB and CMYK colour schemes.
Transcript:
Welcome to Fieldmotion's Growth Hub. I'm Adam. So today we're going to start off pretty easy. This is going to be all about creating business cards.
So there's a lot of resources which we can use to kind of create a business card. There's Photopea, there's Canva. We're going to be using Canva today. So anything I show you today is going to be just in the free version.
So there's like a free seven day trial that you can use and you can get this card created pretty quick.
RGB vs CMYK: Colour for Web and Print
Before I get started properly, I want to talk a little bit about RGB and CMYK. These are the two colour schemes for web and for print. RGB for web and CMYK for print. Basically if we were to create the entire card within RGB colour schemes, it wouldn't come out quite right on the printer.
But if we use CMYK, it'll look exactly as we're intending it to. So what I would say is if you're putting any kind of imagery or logo or icons in make sure that they're converted for CMYK. Canva does offer CMYK conversion. However, that's only with the paid version.
And within this, I want to show you what you can do with a totally free Canva. So by converting all of our elements to CMYK, we can subvert that.
Starting From a Template
Now let's jump into making our first business card. So what we're going to do is we'll look at the templates first. So creating a business card can seem kind of daunting. You kind of think you're making it from scratch.
Really you can just start from a template and make it your own by customising it. And I'll show you exactly how to do that. So let's hop in. So whenever you start Canva, you'll be in the home screen.
You just want to hover down here to the templates and this will give you a search bar and we can just search in business cards. So what that'll do is it'll give us a tonne of examples. So let's go down and see one that we really, really like. So some of these are pretty minimalist and some of them are a little bit more, there's a little bit more kind of impact on them.
There's a lot going on. So I think we'll kind of do a little bit of both. So I quite like this one here, this Drew Feig one. So because it's got a QR code, I quite like QR codes on business cards because it gives you, you know, whoever you're handing it out to a little bit more to interact with.
So we've just clicked on that and we'll hit customise template.
Adding Your Details
So I'll load up the business card here and we get the name, the title there, the logo, and we've got the QR code in the corner there. So what we'll do is we'll actually keep the number the same. We'll do Fieldmotion for the site. We'll just do like hello at Fieldmotion and we'll just keep the address the same there.
So what we'll do is we'll change this here to my name here. So Adam Maguire and I am the video strategist. Perfect. So I actually quite like the way those colours are interacting with each other.
They're the sort of yellow and the blue.
Adding Your Logo
So what we'll do is we'll remove this logo because of course we want to put our own in. So, and that's actually got like a little circle above the texture there. We'll get rid of that circle as well. And what I've done is I've actually created a couple of, you know, I've downloaded the PNG for the logo and the icon and a couple of images.
So what we'll do is we'll kind of pretend that Fieldmotion has turned into sort of an architecture or a construction company. So I just got a couple of logos here. So what we see is we've just brought in the Fieldmotion over here. You'll notice that there's a white background behind it.
That's because this is a JPEG. So JPEGs have the backgrounds behind them. So if we did have the premium version, we'd be able to come up here to background remover and remove that pretty quickly. So just to show you kind of what that looks like.
And it just processes it and it removes it very, very nicely. But we're kind of operating on the idea that, you know, whoever's using this, it's just going to use the free version to knock this card out. So I've actually got a PNG version and the PNG version, you can actually download it without the background. So we'll just have the Fieldmotion icon there and the logo, the name pill.
So what we'll do is we'll shrink it down. It's kind of like how you would do on a Word document. So we can just kind of shrink it down to whatever size we want there. So we'll actually rearrange some of these because I actually want the QR code to be over here and the Fieldmotion logo to be a bit more prominent and increase the size there.
So just kind of sitting directly opposite my name.
Creating a QR Code
So the QR code. So how do we actually make the QR code? It's pretty simple. We can actually just do it all in Canva.
So if you go over to elements, we can just type in QR code and enter and then we'll see this menu at the top here. So create QR code, create and we present it with a couple of designs you can go for. So circles, round squares, blocks. So we'll go with circles to be a wee bit different.
But after that we can then choose the image that appears here. We'll actually choose our URL first. So Fieldmotion. So this is where it's going to redirect your user to and the person having the card.
So you'll see there's like a wee icon here. We can just change that to the full Canva colour logo or just the black one. But if we had the premium version, we could put our own icon logo in there or just remove it entirely. But just for the purposes of this, we'll shrink that down and carry that across.
Place it right there.
Adding a Background Design
So what do we do then about things like the texture there in the background? We can actually just remove that and we'll get something a little bit more this style here. So let's go for wavy design. Just kind of type in, kind of describe what you kind of want and it'll load up what it thinks you kind of need.
So let's see. This kind of wavy design here kind of wants something quite almost rigid kind of to sort of match this sort of architectural sort of design we're going for here. So let's see. A wavy straight line.
Let's see what that comes up with. Let's see what that comes up with. I like that one there. So what we'll see is, is that it's actually sitting above everything else.
It's kind of going over the text and the QR code itself. We really don't want those things to be sort of overshadowed. So we can actually hit position and we can go to layers and we can actually just move that down. So it'll be highlighted in purple there.
We'll just take that, move it down. All right.
Matching Your Colours
And then let's change this white pill here. We can go over to this colour wheel and we can see that it's actually saved the colours that are in the card. So we'll just change to the exact orange. And then just so it doesn't clash, we'll change these to white.
Let's see here. In fact, let's change them to, Oh, I've actually changed them to orange. There we go. White and white.
Let's actually change them to this green here. So how do we actually find what colour that green is? We can actually go over to the colour picker here and we can hover over the green and just select that there. And because it's saved it, we can just hit green, green, green.
It's correct. So now that that's actually clashing a little bit, let's just remove that. And it looks a lot cleaner there. So it's a little bit kind of trial and error a lot of the time.
And this is just simple logo and name.
Designing the Back of the Card
So what it is, let's remove that there. I quite like this kind of effect I've got going here. This kind of 3D effect kind of makes it look like, so I've actually got my icon here. It actually kind of makes it look like it's sort of almost embossed on it.
Quite like that. So Canva is really good at kind of making sure that you're centred on the back of it there. And let's actually just lower it. So it's totally in the centre.
So let's highlight all of those elements. Just bring that down. I accidentally highlighted the background there. So it's all being dragged down.
There we go. And honestly, I would just leave that as it is. It kind of shows a bit of confidence in your design. You know, the icon's strong enough to just sit by itself and you flip it over.
There you go. You've got all of your information that you need there who you're working for. And then I'm a water video strategist, but then just put my little image that I've got here. So this is just a construction or construction site here just to kind of evoke what we're sort of going for.
We're kind of a, we're kind of construction business.
Making Your Image Stand Out
It doesn't really stand out though. So how do we make it stand out? So sometimes if it's an image that's sort of it had sort of almost is like a, it's treating it like a photo. Canva won't let you just change the colour.
You have to actually go into the edit image option and then let's go to filters. And if we go all the way down to one called duotone, we can actually just change the colours there and just make them white. So it stands out a little bit more. Let's see what happens if I even just extend that out.
And then put that behind. In fact, let's take this sort of button design and place it in the corner there. And you can actually see that we've got a danger zone here. So danger zones basically just for whenever we're printing the card out, it means that if there's ever anything goes wrong, um, it won't cut off the sort of necessary information that you need.
So yeah, sort of gives you a good impression of what we do sort of immediately. And then you flip it over, get the full sort of title there. And yeah, that's how you create a business card in Canva.
Previewing Your Card
You can see actually that it gives you sort of a mock-up design of what it'll look like, uh, sort of the back view, front view, um, someone even holding it. Yeah. And then you can actually look at a little 3D kind of render of it. So I can just pull that around.
See exactly what it's going to look like. You can have a little bit of thickness to it.
Downloading and Printing
So Canva does offer for, um, you know, you can print through them, but if not, you can actually just come over here to file and hit download. And it'll be pages one and two. So we'll just print the PNG here. That's just what's suggested.
That's for complex images and illustrations. And you'll see that the only one locked off is SVG. That's just for web design, really. But for the purposes of this, um, you'll see this PDF print as well.
It just depends on what kind of, what your printer actually asks for. So just check with them before, you know, you send it off and always ask for, for proofs of these things, you know, design proofs. And so you don't order, you know, 300 of them and they're not quite right.
